One of our goals at Holy Spirit Church is to impact the staff, students, and faculty of San Diego State University with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This has been important to us from the founding of the church. What this means in the life of Holy Spirit Church is that we regularly pray for the spread of the Gospel on campus and that we plan events in order to make personal connections with the college students, staff, and faculty.
A key component in this outreach is our relationship with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at SDSU. According to the website (www.intervarsity.org), InterVarsity (IV) is “an evangelical campus mission serving students and faculty on college and university campuses nationwide.” IV has chapters on 590 campuses across the United States, with 1,025 staff members and 38,580 core students and faculty involved. Its vision is “to see students and faculty transformed [by Christ], campuses renewed and world changers developed.” While there are several other evangelical campus ministries at SDSU that do good work (Campus Crusade, Youth Life, Challenge, Athletes in Action, etc.), InterVarsity has historically had an emphasis on “thoughtful Christianity” and has proved to be a good fit with our Anglican traditions.
This partnership and support of IV expresses itself in a variety of ways at Holy Spirit Church. We pray for their activities on campus; we regularly provide dinner for their Wednesday large group meetings; we publicize their meetings weekly in our Sunday announcements; we also frequently have staff members speak and preach of our church; our clergy regularly attend the Wednesday large group meetings, along with many of our members; and we cooperate in some outreach events each year, such as our annual St. Nicholas Project.
